What are you getting to the Source of in 2010?

Green Mountain Coffee 2010 CalendarAt 12:01 a.m. today, the bouncing New Year of 2010 came into our lives, heralding new opportunities, goals, and adventures in a cloud of confetti, bubbly, and cheers.

With so many possibilities open to us in the next 365 days, 2010 feels like a year of discovery, of getting to the root of something.  Inspired by our Green Mountain Coffee 2010 Calendar’s theme of “Getting to the Source of Great Coffee,” this year comes down to one question:

What are you getting to the source of in 2010?

Personally, I’m getting to the source of my graduate school procrastination by planning to take the GRE by year’s end.

That’s my plan for discover this year; what about yours?

As an incentive to share, we have 100 of our calendars** ready to ship to your door for the first 100 who leave a comment with their answer before noon EST on Friday, January 15, 2010.

Happy New Year!

My resolution is to simplify – cleaning my house out of build up, healthier living, more time with my family.

In this New Year, I want to get back to the source of my creativity. My Bachelor’s degree is in music with a major in voice and piano. Recently I was listening to a friend sing and this friend said, “Susan, you should come join me.” I had to admit that I haven’t sung in years. Someone standing beside me said, “You don’t sing?? That’s sad!” I thought, “She’s right.” Even if I can’t get back to singing as well as I did when I was 25, I could still get a lot of personal enjoyment out of it. That’s one thing. Playing the piano more sort of goes along with that – I can accompany myself. And then there’s art. I love to paint but I’m always “too busy.” And writing – I get ideas for poems, articles to submit to magazines, stories – but those ideas stay in my head. My wonderfully talented ancestors are the source of any ability I might have in the Arts and I want to honor that part of myself – that part tends to lie dormant while the busyness of life takes over.

I’m an ornithologist, and I cannot figure out why most birders do not care about the damage to the environment, to birds, and to people that they do when they drink cheap unsustainably-grown coffee. They typically understand the issue, and in general are financially well off, yet continue to be unwilling to pursue organic and/or shade-grown coffee. There is some movement, but not enough. I’ve made an effort to educate, but this year am going to try to find the true source of “birder’s inertia” and try to combat it!

I am getting to the source of who I really am. I will be graduating with a B.S. this year and I feel that my ability to be spontaneous and visit new places will be hindered by having a permanent job. So this is going to be the year that I actually go out and do those things I’ve always said I would.

Also, I support Julie and will help her and the world out by buying sustainably-grown coffee. :-)

I’m going to get to the root of hesitancy non-profits have around social networking and websites. I’m going to blog, network, lead workshops, and offer affordable consulting so that good, local causes in my community can publicze and offer their services to an expanded client base.

I’m a weekend woodworker and am going to get to the source of locally harvested and milled lumber from sources that practice sustainable forest management. Until now I’ve obtained most of my project lumber from large big box building stores but recently I’ve found some small local mills that fit my criteria. What’s more, I can use there offcuts and “defect” wood, which actually adds character to the kind of furniture and other projects I tend to make.

In this New Year, I would like to get to the source of putting myself first. I am the mother of 4 children, and have put this off for 23 years. A good start would be to get more sleep, and begin my day with a great cup of coffee.

I have resolved to say “Yes” more to my three year old daughter and minimize the “No, daddy has work to do” answers. House cleaning, work, computer surfing, and games will need to take a backseat this year.

I have about 20 yards of printed fleece in my basement that has been collected over the past year. My goal is to sew it up into blankets for a group called Project Linus which gives blankets to traumatized kids. I have been making blankets for them for years and would like to finished up this fleece this year (so I can buy more!)

I am going to get to the source of my procrastination in moving forward with the abundance of opportunities that I have in my life at this time. I will use every source available to me to gain understanding and forward movement in areas that are waiting for my “yes”!

A message to Aubrey from someone who worked through college and began his careers right after college—you have the right idea. Work of some sort will always be there. Based on what you are saying–do it now–don’t look back years from now with regrets.

I’m not a New years resolution person. But as I enter my 59th year, I’m realizing this year is the beginning of a decade where I will encounter major lifestyle changes, primarily my departure from the traditional workforce. This will require a major adapation on my part—I’ve worked since I was a teenager. This year I begin my planning on how to spend the rest of my life.

@Elizabeth: The source of simplification – I like the sound of that. (You’ll have share the wisdom with me, too!)

  13. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:06 am Kristen

@Susan: What a lovely goal! You’re right on the money when you say that some of your creative outlets get the “too busy” excuse. When life gets going, it’s far too easy to dismiss things that make us happy. Personal creativity is something that should always be nourished. I know you’ll be an artiste by year’s end!

  14. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:17 am Kristen

@Julie: Education, outreach, and action – kudos! Big change starts with one voice.

  15. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:21 am Kristen

@Aubrey: Love to hear it when readers work together! Buying sustainably grown coffee is a great step to help!

As a recent undergraduate myself, I applaud your “source” mission. No need to make a bucket list when you’re older when you’ve already lived your life to the fullest!

  16. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:24 am Kristen

@Michelle: Here, here! You’re going to help those who need the most push and can get the most out of the social arena. Kudos!

  17. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:27 am Kristen

@Brian: I can’t claim to know much about woodworking, but the idea that you’re going to make a move toward more sustainable lumber is amazing! I have no doubt you’re going to make an impact – hey, you just impacted me, at the very least!

  18. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:31 am Kristen

@Angie: A “source” mission that many mothers need to take on. You’ve got to take care of yourself, especially with 4 children. I know you can do it!

  19. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:35 am Kristen

@Aaron: I’m sure your daughter will appreciate it. I hope there are many afternoon tea parties in your future (at least, that’s what I remember making my dad do when I was a tot.). :-)

  20. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:37 am Kristen

@Judi: Getting to the source of something so you can do more good – love it!

  21. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:39 am Kristen

@Pam: Great idea! Sometimes there are are so many opportunities it’s easy to not pick one and accidentally let them go by. Not this year!

  22. on 05 Jan 2010 at 11:39 am Kristen

@WSC: Time for some fun, from the sounds of it. I hope you’ll find it this year – and in the rest of your life!

One of my goals for 2010 is to get to the source of art as a career and not just a hobby. It’s far too easy to keep your passion on the back-burner, and this year I’d like to take my artwork to the next level. Plus, what better way to get your creative juices flowing than a delicious cup of Green Mountain Coffee? :)

  24. on 06 Jan 2010 at 2:09 pm Mandy

My marriage! My husband and I have been working on “getting back to good” and he starts every day off right by making me a pot of Green Mountain coffee.

  25. on 06 Jan 2010 at 11:42 pm Mike

My goal is the same! I’m planning on taking the GRE this summer… JUST in case grad school happens for me in the near future.

I’m also hoping to make a little more time for myself and for my friends.

I’m getting down to the source of family and home! I’m preparing for my first child and re-evaluating priorites, material things, and what’s important for me in my life.

We are promoting one different Vermont business each and every day of 2010 through social media. We are very excited about what this means for Vermont businesses and couldn’t be happier with what we have committed ourselves to. Vermont businesses are still feeling the pinch of the tough economic times, and with our pricing system that we have in place, many Vermont businesses will now be able to market their business that may not have been able to otherwise.

I am getting organized this year! :)

I am getting to the source of what it takes to build a home for my family. We’re closing on property and building a new house.

  31. on 08 Jan 2010 at 9:26 am Tim

Personally, I’m getting to the source of all within me and rediscovering my creative writing side. I’ve been starting the year off with daily poetry writings (something I haven’t done in years — but I missed it!) and poetry exercises and will hopefully be building a portfolio for myself.

My goal is to be able to collect these into a book, and by the end of the year transform some of them into lyrics and record an album combined with original music.

  32. on 08 Jan 2010 at 9:31 am Diane

I have a goal of living in the moment. If I can get to the source of my anxious thoughts I can let go of them and cling to what is good…God, family, love, friends and work.

I want to get to the source of inner peace, through a more dedicated yoga practice!

I’m getting to the source of making our home the way I and my family want and need it to be. Getting rid of decades-old wallpaper, insulating drafty spots, keeping living spaces cleaner and more functional, paring down, saying goodbye to lots of stuff and limiting the amount of new stuff that finds its way in. Enough procrastinating! Home is where we should feel comfortable and safe and happy, not burdened by mountains of clutter.

This year I’ll have an on going list. But I truly want to get to the source of what truly makes me happy. As an undergrad my semester is pretty filled so this summer I’m off to New York City to figure things out, have some fun, and help some people. I think 2010 will be a good year. I can feel it in my bones.
And of course it will be filled with Green Mountain Coffee. ;)

I’m getting to the source of my relationship with my kennel of sled dogs, my wife, and my writing.
It’s a trifecta that should rekindle and build on the bonds that make my life whole.

Getting to the source of whatever needs to happen to weigh 20 pounds less by the end of 2010.

I’m getting to the source of learning Mandarin! My goal is to be business conversational by the end of 2010…

I plan to get to the source of my spontaneity. I am always moving and trying new careers and new hobbies. While it is all very adventurous and exciting, I need to get to a point in my life where I know what’s coming next. A new decade should be a perfect start for the structure I’d like to find. And a good time to get refocused on my PhD work, which is 99% fueled by Green Mountain Coffee (particularly your Kcups!!). I have converted all the non-New Englanders in the office. Plus we study climate, so what better way to contemplate the changes in our systems than by drinking coffee from a sustainable company? We love it.

I want to get to the source of why I can’t seem to commit to an exercise program and diet so I can lose a little weight. I’ll start it, then I lose my motivation a few days into it and find myself skipping exercise here and there, then giving in to eating bad foods…. Why can’t I just make a decision and stick to it?

  41. on 08 Jan 2010 at 8:20 pm Ed Whitman

I am getting to the source of learning Spanish. I have some audio tapes, but want to get better at speaking it. Secondarily, spending more quality time with my two sons.

2010 is a year for new growth, professionally and personally. I have my energy spread across my IT admin as a first career, glass bead artisan becoming a second career and so much more on my plate.
There is so much potential that I have not yet explored… so I look forward to all the opportunities ahead of me!
